Samsung intends to make your kitchen experience even more seamless with its new app, SmartThings Cooking, debuted at the virtual CES 2021 conference and produced in collaboration with Whisk’s Food AI to create 'personalized cooking experiences.' While SmartThings is a standalone app (compatible with both iOS and Android devices), it seems the only way to access all of the app's features is to also own Samsung's Family Hub Refrigerator and one of their Front Control Slide-in Ranges.

If you're looking to use the app on its own, you'll need a WiFi connection and a Samsung account. App users can input dietary preferences and restrictions, then the SmartThings Cooking app will curate recipes based on your tastes. The biggest benefit of using this app for non-smart appliance owners seems to be the one-stop grocery shopping feature that allows users to order ingredients for any given recipe within the app from Walmart, Kroger, Instacart, or Amazon Fresh.
The smart features increase exponentially when you own a Family Hub fridge (version 2.0 or newer) and/or a Front Control Slide-in Range. The smart fridge has a board that's optimized for SmartThings Cooking so that the app knows what's inside the fridge, which means it'll only add ingredients you need to your shopping list (and not the items you already have).
For those with Samsung's smart ranges, you'll be able to preheat and manage your oven temperature remotely using the SmartThings Cooking app. We haven't tested any of these yet, but we plan to test Samsung's new kitchen appliances and smart home tech in the near future.
We'll be covering virtual CES 2021 throughout this week, so check back for updates.
